Obituary for Michael Mombourquette
The family of Michael Anthony Mombourquette is deeply saddened to announce his sudden passing in Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, BC, on October 9, 2019. Michael was born in Fredericton NB on February 28, 1959. He was the son of Theresa (Clannon) and Joseph Mombourquette, and was predeceased by his wife Beverley (Edwards), and his father Joe.
He is survived by his daughter Mandy, her husband Shane Scallon, their four children, Caileen, Jessy, Betty and Freddie, his mother Theresa, and siblings Colin (Arlene), Peter, Kevin, David, and Maureen Cook (Dale), as well as Beverley’s siblings Debbie Edwards and Wayne Edwards, many nieces and nephews, and Jean Campbell, Deborah Fraser and Kim Nguyen. He is fondly remembered by his Godparents, Bud and Barbara Campbell, his Aunts, Sister Rose Mary Mombourquette and Anna Mombourquette, Uncle Fred and Aunt Margaret Sampson, and numerous cousins in Cape Breton, Halifax and Ontario.
Michael was born to the outdoors, sharing his father and grandfathers' love of fishing and hunting. He spent many days fishing trout in the streams and rivers of NB, duck hunting on the St. John River, rabbit and deer hunting on Base Gagetown, and picking fiddleheads on the river islands. He spent his summers in the family's home village of L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, where he lived at the shore digging clams, or fishing mackerel off the Cape Island boats with his cousins. He was particularly fond of his grandfather Anthony Mombourquette, who was his constant companion and fishing buddy.
After graduation in 1978, Michael attended community college in Nova Scotia, and worked in Alberta for a year before heading to British Columbia. It was in Vancouver where he was able to pursue his life of fishing, hiring on as a commercial fisherman. Over the years he fished many species including salmon, herring, black cod, shrimp, and Alaska king crab. He relocated to the Nanaimo area of east Vancouver Island, and later moved toTofino on the west coast of the Island. In his final decade he was first mate, engineer and cook, on an 85–foot trawler fishing out of the port of Ucluelet. He made many friends among the other fishermen, and was well liked by many in the First Nations communities from Ucluelet to Tofino.
A Mass of Remembrance will be held for friends and family at 11 am, Friday, November 8, 2019, at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 25 Loisville St., Oromocto, NB. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or other deserving charity.
